The best challah bread recipe I’ve ever tried is this one epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Chernowitzer-Challah-235871
If you follow the challah recipe exactly you’ll get a great challah. Follow these extra steps to get a gourmet challah bread recipe that everyone will love. I used the saffron exactly as they explain in their recipe and made only two modifications to the recipe. Where it calls for oil I used half the amount of oil and the other half butter. Where it calls for sugar I used half the amount of sugar and the other half orange blossom honey. Other than that follow the recipe as described on their website. I prefer using parchment paper rather than oiling the pan for baking the dough.
You can use the challah recipe to make 16 challah rolls or two loaves of bread. Challah rolls can be simply tied in a knot or made as round rolls. Either way be sure to beat one egg then brush that on the shaped rolls or bread. This causes a nice golden color when they bake and it gives the seeds something to stick to when you sprinkle them on top. Mixing in some golden raisins into the dough is a great addition as well. Be sure to follow the directions about plumping them up by soaking in water first.
